Italian Surnames Index
Browse the Italian Surnames Index
The index works in a simple way: Italian surnames are organized alphabetically, with navigation by initial letter and additional subdivisions when necessary, allowing visitors to quickly locate the surname they are looking for.
Many surnames in the index include a link to the Italian Surnames Dictionary. Whenever a surname appears as a red link, simply click on it to access a detailed dictionary entry containing information about its meaning, origin, geographical distribution, spelling variants, historical and linguistic notes, and bibliographic references.
Because Italian surnames often have numerous spelling variants and closely related forms, not every variant has its own dictionary entry. Instead, a single representative surname is usually linked to an article covering the entire surname family. For example, surnames such as Ranghetti, Ranghetto, Ranghini, Ranghino, Rangone, and Rangoni are grouped together in a single entry, where their common origin, historical development, and geographical distribution are discussed.
Each dictionary entry may include information about:
- surname meaning and origin;
- spelling variants;
- regional distribution;
- historical and linguistic notes;
- bibliographic references.
This index is continuously expanding, and new Italian surnames and dictionary entries will be added progressively.
