E. Rossoni derives it from a dialectal form of the name Aleardus, although he considers possible, if unlikely, a derivation as an abbreviated form of the name Galiardus. He documents the surname in the Bergamo area from the second half of the 17th century with the judge Camillo Agliardi.

It is considered, on the other hand, to be a recurrent anthroponymic surname, derived from Adalhard ("noble and bold").
