The authors agree that the surname was formed from the name Anastasio, of Greek origin.
A. Bongioanni specifies that the name derives from anastasis ("resurrection"), and that it was sometimes given to pagans at the moment of baptism. He recalls Saint Anastasius the pope, celebrated on 27 April, and Saint Anastasius bishop of Pavia, celebrated on 28 May. He notes that the popular form is Ostasio.
N. Bergamo records it as a surname of Greek origin, taken from the given name.
