E. De Felice identifies it as a surname of Emilia, of the Marche and also of Abruzzo, formed from the place name Ancarano (in the provinces of Pesaro and Teramo, among others).

E. Rossoni agrees on the toponymic base and suggests that it could also derive from names of localities originating from the presence of a temple dedicated to the goddess Ancaria. With this name the marquis of Spoleto and Camerino between 937 and 940 is remembered.
