Origin and meaning

V. Blunda and N. Bergamo differ on the origin of the surname.

Blunda, for the Sicilian variant, derives it from the dialectal word alòi, the Sicilian form of the personal name Aloisio (a medieval variant of Luis). He notes that it belongs to the broad group of patronymics formed on given names popular in the Late Middle Ages, when devotion to Saint Louis king of France and to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was very widespread also in Mediterranean territories.

Bergamo, on the other hand, proposes a Greek origin, from the term aloè, meaning "garden".
