Origin and meaning
The authors agree that the surname has as its base the name Angelo (Angelus), of Christian tradition, meaning "messenger of God".
F. De Laurentiis notes that the surname is widespread throughout Italy.
S. Galantini identifies it as a patronymic derived from Angeli with the affectionate hypocoristic suffix -ini. The plural form may reflect a collective value —to indicate the whole of the family group—, or, as a singular genitive, with the meaning of "son of". He specifies that it continues in part the Late Latin name, of Christian milieu, Angelus.
Galantini documents the surname in the 17th century in Penne, and in the 18th century in Civitella del Tronto, in Sant'Omero, in Nereto, in Tortoreto and in Mosciano Sant'Angelo, where it was introduced from the Marche locality of Recanati.
