The surname Berti and its many related forms —including Bertelli, Bertini, Bertoni, and others— is among the most widespread surnames in Italy, particularly in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, followed by Lombardy and the regions of northeastern Italy.

De Felice, the surname derives from the medieval hypocoristic Bèrto, a shortened form created through aphaeresis from Germanic personal names ending in -berto, such as Alberto, Lamberto, Roberto, Umberto, and Uberto.
