Bertagnoni

This form is a variant of the surname Bertagnon.

Origin and meaning

The surname Bertagnon and its variant Bertagnoni are very infrequent forms, with an origin linked to old names of Germanic root. According to E. Rossoni, they would derive from elements such as bertha ("luminous") or bert ("bearer"), present in numerous Gothic, Lombard and Germanic names spread in medieval Italy. This anthroponymic base explains their formation as a surname from personal names transmitted within a lineage.

From the geographical point of view, E. Rossoni indicates that Bertagnon seems peculiar to the Padua area, while Bertagnoni would be located in the Vicenza area. This limited distribution reinforces the idea of a specific regional development, probably linked to dialectal variants of the same original name.

For his part, F. De Laurentiis proposes a more synthetic interpretation, considering them derived from Bèrti, within the Venetian onomastic tradition. Taken together, both interpretations agree in pointing to an anthroponymic origin of Germanic root, with a local evolution that gave rise to rare and geographically limited forms.
