The authors agree that this surname derives from Ventura, in turn linked to the personal name Bonaventura. E. De Stefani broadens this explanation by noting that ventura alludes, on the one hand, to a name of good omen —with the sense of "may you have a good destiny"— and, on the other, to the custom documented in several zones of Italy, such as Lombardy and the Ticino, of assigning to foundling children names derived from ventura, in the sense of luck or fortuitous event, which over time were transformed into a surname.

E. Costantini notes that one of the main nuclei of the surname in Friuli is found in Gemona, with presences also in Udine, Artegna, Basaldella di Campoformido, Azzida di San Pietro al Natisone, Buja, Osoppo, Variano di Basiliano and San Giorgio di Nogaro. De Stefani agrees in pointing to Gemona and Udine, and adds localities such as Cordovado, Buttrio and Buia, as well as the Carnia —a mountainous zone of northern Friuli, in the province of Udine—, with documentation in Villa Santina, Ampezzo, Enemonzo and Fielis from the mid-16th century.

F. De Laurentiis incorporates a variant of toponymic origin: in some cases the surname could derive from the place name Venturina, a locality in the province of Livorno.
