Vendetto

This form is a variant of the surname Venditti.

Origin and meaning

From the first name Benedetto meaning blessed, from the latin verb "benedicere", to bless.

The authors agree that the surname derives from the name Benedictus, from Latin, whose meaning is "protected, blessed by God". Through a phonetic process documented in several dialects of central and southern Italy, Benedictus was transformed first into Bendictus and then, by the characteristic exchange between the consonants b and v typical of certain dialects, into Vendictus, a form that in Italian derived into Venditto and, finally, into the surname Venditti.

S. Vannozzi provides specific documentation about Cercemaggiore, in the Campobasso area (Molise), where from the first half of the 16th century the old forms Vendicto and Venditto are recorded. According to Vannozzi, the evolutionary chain in that locality starts from the Latin form De Benedicto, passes through the popular form Vennitto, then Venditto, and concludes in Venditti, a transformation into a surname that was documented in that sequence.

E. Rossoni notes that the variants of the surname are distributed mainly in Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise and the Naples area. The variant Venditti is the most widespread in those regions; Venditto is concentrated in Rome and the Caserta and Naples area; Vendittis appears in the area between Latina and Caserta; and Vendittozzi is located in Rome and Nettuno.
