Sismonda

This form is a variant of the surname Sigismondi.

Origin and meaning

From the first name Sigismondo, of German origin, consisting of "sigis" = victory and "munda" = protection.

E. De Felice and E. Rossoni agree that the surname was formed from the name of Germanic origin Sigismondo (Sigismund, Siegmund), composed of the elements sig-/sigis- ("victory") and mund- ("protection, protector"), with the possible original meaning of "one who ensures protection through victory."

De Felice specifies that it includes the reduced variant Sismondo or Simondo, equivalent to the German Sigismund or Siegmund. The element sigu- may also appear in the theme extended in -s, sigis-.

Rossoni recalls among the historical bearers of the name Sigismund of Luxembourg (1387–1437), king in 1410 and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1433 to 1437. Rossoni further distinguishes the forms: Sigismondi has a zone in the Bergamo area, in particular in Ponteranica, another in Rome and in the Frosinone area —in Monte San Giovanni Campano and Boville Ernica—, and another between the Chieti and Pescara areas, in Chieti, Pescara, Lanciano and Vasto. Sigismondo, very infrequent, has a zone in the Varese area, another in the Caserta area and another in the Bari area.
