Diffused throughout Italy, but sporadic and rare except in the Venetias (in Venice it is the second surname in order of frequency). It is the surname formation of nicknames formed or derived from scarpa ("shoe") with various motivations: the trade name of the scarparo, "shoemaker," or else referring to one who is una scarpa, in a figurative sense, or to one who wears particular shoes, and so on.
