Scannapiecoro

This form is a variant of the surname Scannapieco.

Origin and meaning

The authors agree that this surname derives from a trade nickname in the Neapolitan dialect: scannà ("to slaughter") and piecuro ("lamb, ram"). The nickname designated the itinerant butchers who went from house to house during Easter to slaughter the lambs.

E. De Felice notes that the original dialect form is scannapiécure, and highlights the southern character of the surname, with a strong presence in the Naples area. E. Rossoni specifies that Scannapieco is specific to the Salerno area, with a presence also in the Naples area, and adds that the variant Scannapiecoro is very rare.
