Diffused throughout Italy, it prevails in the north, where it is very frequent. It is the surname formation of the name of Christian tradition and devotion Santo, "sacred, venerated; saint," and in part also Santi, an aphaeretic hypocoristic of Ognissanti, the feast of "all the saints."
