Salamanga

This form is a variant of the surname Salamanca.

Origin and meaning

E. De Felice notes that this surname derives from the name of the Spanish city of Salamanca, the historical capital of León, and that in Italy it appears sporadically in the south.

F. Miranda broadens this characterization and specifies that it is a surname of ethnic type, originated in the place name of that same Spanish city, and that it probably functioned originally as a byname of the first bearer, in the sense of "the one from Salamanca." Its presence in Italy covers specific and precise zones of the territory: the main nucleus is found in Sicily, with a presence in the Catania area —which includes localities such as Mineo and Mascalucia—, Messina —with Patti, Tusa and Rometta—, Palermo —with Gangi and San Mauro Castelverde—, and also in the Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Enna areas, where Centuripe is recorded. Outside Sicily, Miranda documents its presence in the Lecce area, in the region of Apulia, as well as in Piedmont, Lazio, Lombardy, Tuscany and Abruzzo.
