According to E. De Felice, Saccardi derives from the name or nickname Saccardo, coming from the old Italian term saccardo, formed from sacco ("sack, bag") and the suffix -ardo. In the medieval armies, this term designated the person in charge of the custody and transport of provisions and baggage. Over time, the word also acquired a broader and, at times, pejorative sense, associated with plunderers or thieves.
