E. De Felice and F. De Laurentiis agree that the surname was formed from the toponymic type Rovere, derived from rovere ("oak"), frequent in the north also with various determinations —in the provinces of Forlì, Mantua, Verona, Trento, among others— and from its corresponding demonyms.
De Laurentiis adds that it is diffused in the north, especially in the central-eastern area.
