Rimendi
This form is a variant of the surname Raimondi.
Origin and meaning
E. De Felice, F. De Laurentiis and E. Rossoni agree that the surname was formed from the name of Germanic origin Raimondo.
De Felice specifies that the name is composed of the element ragan- or ragin- (in Gothic ragin), with the sense of "counsel, decision inspired by the gods" and also "divine," and of munda- (in German Mund), which means "protection, protector." The original meaning could be "one who protects with the counsel of the gods" or "divine protection."
De Felice notes that, although it appears from 806 in Lombard documents of Farfa Sabina as Rachimundus, it has in Italy —as in France and the Iberian Peninsula— a Frankish tradition, and becomes increasingly frequent from the 10th century in the forms Ragemundus, Ragimundus and later Raimundus.
De Laurentiis agrees on the Germanic origin and adds that the oldest form, Raginmund, makes the meaning of the composition more transparent: "protection (mund) of the counsel (ragin)," or else "divine protection," according to the sense that the Gothic ragin assumes in the corresponding Old Norse word. He notes that the surname is diffused throughout Italy.
Rossoni specifies that the surname derives from the medieval Italo-Germanic name Raimondo and, in the south, from the Norman name Raimund. He documents it in Milan with Giacomino Raimondi, Captain of the Martesana between 1452 and 1454.
