They should derive, directly or through various diminutive variants, from the medieval Germanic name Rango or Rangonis, documented in Florence in the 13th century. The transformation into a surname is documented in the 14th century, when the Rangoni became feudataries of lands of the Modena area, a property preserved until the Napoleonic era, and gave their name to the place names Castelnuovo Rangone and Levizzano Rangone. In some cases, Rangoni could derive from the place name Rangone in the Modena area.

Variants

Geographic distribution: Ranghetti is typical of the area between the Milan, Bergamo and Brescia areas. Ranghetto, very rare, would seem specific to Maserà di Padova in the Padua area. Ranghini, almost unique, is from the Alessandria area. Ranghino is Piedmontese: Vercelli, Novara and Casale Corte Cerro in the Verbania area. Rangone, very rare, is specific to the Alessandria area. Rangoni is typical of the Bologna area.
