Ragone
This form is an altered form of the surname Aragona.
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that the surname was formed from the name of the Spanish region of Aragon.
E. De Felice specifies that Aragon was an independent state until 1479, and that the surname spread with the Aragonese conquest and rule of southern Italy, begun in 1282. He notes that it is widespread in the south.
E. Rossoni adds that the surname derives from nicknames related to the name of the region or to its gentilic, which indicated Spanish origin. In very rare cases it could allude to the Spanish lineage of the Aragona, which is more likely for the D'Aragona.
