Platy

This form is a variant of the surname Plati.

Origin and meaning

It could derive from the Latin byname Platorius for the northern Italian branch, while the southern branch would derive from the place name Platì (Reggio Calabria).

According to G. Rohlfs, it is a surname of Greek-Byzantine origin, present in Catanzaro (the city) and in the province of Catanzaro (Montepaone); it coincides with the comune of Platì (province of Reggio Calabria). From the Greek Πλατύ ('wide'), a frequent place name in Greece. A sister form of Platy. It may lose the grave accent in Argentina (Plati).
