Pieniz
This form is a variant of the surname Pienig.
Origin and meaning
The surname Pienig is of Slavic origin and shows a very rare and localized character in the south-eastern area of the province of Udine. On this point E. Rossoni and B. Zuanella agree, noting its presence in areas of cultural contact between Italy and the Slavic world.
B. Zuanella explains that it derives from a hypocoristic form such as Pin(o) —related to names such as Giuseppino, Filippino or Jacopino— to which is added the Slavic patronymic suffix -ič (adapted in Italian as -iz or -ig), with the meaning of 'son of'. In this way, the surname reflects the adaptation of Slavic onomastic structures to the Italian context, keeping its original patronymic value.
