Messo
This form is a variant of the surname Messi.
Origin and meaning
The surname Messi has a well-defined historical distribution in Italy, with two main areas of origin that appear to have developed independently over time.
According to Italian surname researcher Ettore Rossoni, one branch of the surname originated in Ponte San Pietro, in the province of Bergamo (Lombardy). From there, it spread to the city of Milan and later throughout other parts of the region. A second historical nucleus developed in Le Marche, particularly in Macerata and Recanati, later extending across the province and into neighboring Ancona.
Because these two geographic centers are clearly distinct, it is possible that some branches of the surname developed through different historical processes and may not share the same immediate origin.
Origin and Meaning of the Surname Messi
The exact origin of the surname remains uncertain, and several etymological explanations have been proposed.
According to Rossoni, Messi, together with the rare surnames Messo and Mezzi, may derive directly or through dialectal variations from the Germanic personal name Metzel. In this interpretation, the surname would be patronymic in nature, meaning that it originated from the name of an ancestor.
Other scholars have suggested that Messi may signify “descendant of Messio.” Messio was a Latin personal name known during the Middle Ages and documented in several Italian regions. Historical figures bearing this name include the Renaissance printer Girolamo Messio and the Sienese theologian Simone Messio, demonstrating the historical use of the name throughout Italy.
Another hypothesis connects the surname with the ancient Metzis, the Gallic people who gave their name to the city of Metz, in present-day France. Under this interpretation, the surname may have originated as an ethnonym identifying people who came from that region or were descended from individuals associated with it.
A further possibility is that the surname developed from the Italian word messo, meaning “messenger,” “envoy,” or “official bearer of messages.” The term derives from the Latin missus, the past participle of mittere (“to send”). In this case, the surname would have been occupational, identifying an ancestor whose role involved carrying messages, delivering official communications, or acting as an intermediary for authorities or institutions.
Rossoni does not favor one explanation over the others, noting that multiple origins may be possible depending on the specific family branch.
Related Surnames: Messi, Messo and Mezzi
The surnames Messi, Messo, and Mezzi share linguistic similarities and may be connected through common historical roots.
Rossoni identifies Messo as an almost unique surname in modern Italy. Mezzi, although also very rare, appears to have at least three historical areas of concentration: one in Salento, another in the province of Parma, and a third in the upper part of the province of Brescia.
These surnames likely reflect centuries of dialectal evolution, regional pronunciation differences, and spelling variations, all common phenomena in the development of Italian surnames.
