Mazzurco

This form is a variant of the surname Mazurco.

Origin and meaning

The authors agree that Mazurco is a very rare variant, generally regarded as a transcription error for Mazzurco. Both likewise agree that the surname derives from the Arabic Marzurq, a personal name which could also function as a byname with the auspicious meaning of "the fortunate one" or "the blessed one".

E. Rossoni notes that Mazzurco is typically Sicilian, with a presence in the Palermo area —including Partinico—, in the Catania area —with Mascalucia and Motta Sant'Anastasia—, in the Messina area —with Mistretta and Tortorici—, in Syracuse, and in the Enna area —with Leonforte and Centuripe. F. Miranda agrees on the areas of Enna, Catania, Messina and Palermo, but specifies different localities: Catenanuova in the Enna area, Cesarò in the Messina area, and Partinico in the Palermo area.
