Lauri
This form is an altered form of the surname Lauricella.
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that the surname is of Sicilian origin and derives, according to the most widely accepted hypothesis, from a diminutive of the Latin cognomen Laureola. F. Miranda further notes a second theory: that the surname could result from the fusion of the surnames Lauri and Cella, although he considers it less well supported.
Miranda documents that the surname is found throughout Sicily and, with a more limited presence, in other regions of Italy, among them Lazio, Lombardy, Tuscany, Liguria, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Sardinia and Veneto. Within Sicily, the areas of greatest presence are those of Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Messina, Palermo, Catania and Syracuse; it is also recorded in the Enna area.
E. Rossoni specifies that the origin of the surname is located specifically in the province of Agrigento.
