Kocjančič
This form is a variant of the surname Canciani.
Origin and meaning
Canciani is a surname derived from the Latin personal name Cantianus. According to E. De Stefani and E. Rossoni, this name is closely connected with the cult of the Christian martyrs Canciano, Cancio, and Cancianila, who were martyred in Aquileia during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian around the year 300.
De Stefani explains that Cantianus was formed from the Latin personal name Cantius combined with the suffix -anus. In Roman naming traditions, this suffix often indicated ownership of an estate or property. Just as Iulianus referred to an estate belonging to a member of the gens Julia, Cantianus originally referred to property associated with the gens Cantia. Over time, the personal name became a hereditary surname.
Distribution
Canciani is concentrated primarily in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The surname is especially present in the areas of Udine, Pordenone, Spilimbergo, Monfalcone, and Trieste, with additional clusters in the province of Treviso.

Notes
E. Costantini records the form Cancian in the Friulian area and notes the documentation of an individual identified as chacian de pristint during the 14th century.
E. Rossoni points out that the personal name was already in use during the Middle Ages and cites a document preserved in Pavia dating from 1139. He also mentions the historian Paulus Canciani, author of Barbarorum leges antiquae.
According to De Stefani, the place name San Canzian d'Isonzo preserves the memory of the ancient gens Cantia. For some branches of the Canciani family, particularly those from the area of Gorizia, a toponymic connection with this locality may also be possible.
