A. Bongioanni identifies it as a Latin given name. He notes that in Cadore the dialectal form is Gneca, from which derive the surnames Gnech and Gnecchi.

E. Rossoni derives it from the medieval name Angelicus or Angelica. He documents it with a certain Angelicus, podestà of Lovere (Bergamo) in 1524.
