Furlanetto

This form is a variant of the surname Furlan.

Origin and meaning

Surnames in Italy documents this surname in the municipal territory of Santa Maria la Longa, in Friuli, between 1238 and 1489, with the first documentation in the form "Udulrico Furlano" (Pola). This surname is usually found outside Friuli (Trieste, the Veneto, Istria, Slovenia) or on its edges (Gorizia, the Pordenone area, Monfalcone, Sappada). The word "furlan" comes from the medieval Latin foroiulianus, which at first had the sense of "inhabitant of the city of Forum Julii" (= Cividale); later "Forum Julii / Forijulii" came to designate the whole of Friuli, and a foroiulianus was a Friulian, one who came from Friuli.
