Ferraretto

This form is a variant of the surname Ferrarese.

Origin and meaning

E. Rossoni considers that Ferrarese and its variants are ethnic forms —in Italian or in dialect— referring to the city of Ferrara. According to Rossoni, Ferrarese seems of Venetan origin, with presence also in the region of Puglia; Ferraresi is typically of Emilia-Romagna, with specific zones in the lower Veneto and in Lombardy; and Ferraretto is clearly Venetan.

F. De Laurentiis notes that the surname is spread throughout Italy, with high frequency in Lombardy and in Emilia-Romagna, and that it was formed from the place name Ferrara and from its gentilic.
