Faccini

This form is an altered form of the surname Bonifacio.

Origin and meaning

Meaning

Bonifacio is a surname derived from the Latin personal name Bonifatius, an auspicious name of the Late Roman Empire formed from bonus ("good") and fatum ("destiny" or "fate"). According to E. De Felice and A. Bongioanni, the original meaning was "[may he have] a good destiny" or "[may he enjoy] good fortune."

Over time, the name was reinterpreted through popular etymology as "the one who does good," associating the second element with the Latin verb facere ("to do"). The personal name became widespread through the veneration of several Christian saints, particularly Saint Boniface the Martyr and Saint Boniface the Pope, whose cult helped ensure its continued use throughout the Middle Ages.

P. Lastrico likewise considers Bonifacio and Bonifazio to be direct descendants, or dialectal developments, of the Latin name Bonifatius.

Distribution

According to E. De Felice and A. Bongioanni, Bonifacio is especially frequent in northern Italy, although it also occurs sporadically in central and southern regions.

F. Miranda notes that the surname is present in approximately 360 comuni across almost all Italian regions. Significant concentrations are found in Piemonte, Campania, Sicilia, Lombardia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, and Lazio. In Sicilia, the surname occurs in all provinces, with particularly notable concentrations in the areas of Catania, Agrigento, Messina, and Enna.

Notes

S. Dedòla suggests that, in Sardegna, some occurrences of the surname may be connected to the place name Bocche di Bonifacio, the strait separating Sardegna from Corsica. This interpretation is presented as a regional hypothesis and does not replace the widely accepted derivation from the personal name Bonifatius.

Bonifacio belongs to a large group of Italian surnames derived from medieval auspicious personal names. These names conveyed wishes for good fortune, prosperity, and success and later became hereditary surnames throughout Italy.
