Crotta

This form is a variant of the surname Cròtti.

Origin and meaning

E. De Felice and F. De Laurentiis agree that it is a Lombard surname, frequent in the Milan area, formed from the place name Crotta d'Adda, a locality of the province of Cremona.

There is another alternative hypothesis of anthroponymic origin: the surname could derive from a Lombard hypocoristic Rotto, linked to the Germanic root hrōþ-, with the sense of "fame", and represented with Frankish spelling as Chroth-. This source places the surname in relation to the zone of the Isola Bergamasca and notes as related forms the surnames Crotta and possibly Rottoli.
