Corasiniti
This form is a variant of the surname Corasaniti.
Origin and meaning
E. Rossoni proposes that the surname would derive from a name of Greek origin linked to a locality not identified with precision, related to the Greek term korax ("crow"), perhaps the city of Khora in Greece. He considers it typically Calabrian, with presence in the province of Catanzaro —in localities such as Davoli, San Sostene and the city of Catanzaro— and in the Crotone area.
G. Rohlfs agrees on the Greek-Byzantine origin and on the Calabrian location, but offers a different toponymic interpretation: the surname would designate "the people of Corasano", that is, those who came from a place called Corasano. He records variants such as Corasiniti and Corosiniti, and notes that the surname reflects the Byzantine presence in southern Italy. Geographically, he documents it in the city of Catanzaro and its province —including Stróngoli, the Soverato area and Crotone—, as well as in the province of Cosenza, in Girifalco.
V. Blunda analyses it from Sicily and proposes that it comes from the Greek coyrasanìtes, a form that he interprets as a Byzantine gentilic with the suffix -ites, an indicator of geographical provenance. He notes that it responds to the habitual pattern by which Greek gentilics of this type became surnames in Sicily.
P. Durante points to Greek as the origin, and suggests with reservations a possible relation with Khorasan —a historical region of Central Asia—, although without developing the hypothesis.
As a whole, the sources converge on the Greek origin of the surname and on its rooting in southern Italy, with special concentration in Calabria. The most widespread interpretation is the toponymic-gentilic one: the surname would identify those who came from a place called Corasano or similar, whether on Italian soil or in the sphere of the Greek-Byzantine world.
