Contiéllo
This form is an altered form of the surname Cónti.
Origin and meaning
The surname Conti has an anthroponymic origin (that is, derived from a personal name or title) linked to medieval dignities and offices. According to E. De Felice, it derives from the name Conte (and its feminine Contessa), formed from the Latin comes, comitis, which originally meant "companion" —especially of the emperor— and which over time came to designate a high official and then a noble title.
During the Middle Ages, the term conte evolved to indicate a dignitary invested by the king or the emperor, in charge of the government of a territory (county), and subsequently became consolidated as a title of nobility. From this use, the term was adopted as a name and then as a surname.
The blog Alessandria / Lissondria reinforces this interpretation, noting that the surname takes up the dignity of the count and that, although in some cases it may reflect a noble lineage, in many others it extended to persons linked to the administrative sphere or to the service of a feudal lord. This wider use explains its great diffusion. It is documented early in 1192 with the mention of Otto de Committibus among the consuls of Alessandria.
For his part, G. P. Holmes recalls the original Latin meaning of comes as "companion", thus highlighting the oldest root of the term before its evolution towards a noble title.
Conclusion
As a whole, Conti is a surname that arises from a medieval title of great prestige, with a double possibility of origin: in some cases linked to the nobility, and in many others to administrative functions or relations of dependence within the feudal system. Its wide diffusion makes it one of the most representative surnames derived from titles in Italy.
