Coluccini
This form is a variant of the surname Colucci.
Origin and meaning
Meaning
The surname Colucci derives from the medieval name Colutius and, more commonly, from Cola, a hypocoristic (shortened form) of the personal name Nicola. According to F. De Laurentiis, Cola arose through aphaeresis, a linguistic process that removes the initial syllable of a word, transforming Nicola into Cola.
This personal name became particularly widespread in southern Italy, in the northeastern regions of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige, as well as in parts of the central Adriatic coast, largely due to the strong influence of the cult of Saint Nicholas of Bari.
Historical Origins
E. Rossoni documents the use of the name Colutius before the year 1000. One of the earliest known references appears in an inscription dated 963 in the church of San Matteo in Scala, in the province of Salerno. The name is also recorded in Florence during the 14th century, where it was borne by a notary and judge.
These early attestations demonstrate the antiquity of the name and its gradual transformation into a hereditary surname.
Distribution
According to E. Rossoni, Colucci is especially characteristic of central and southern Italy, although it is also present in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.
Several related variants show more localized distributions:
- Coluccini is concentrated in the province of Lucca, particularly in Pietrasanta, Camaiore, and Massarosa, with additional clusters in the areas of Macerata, Terni, and Rome.
- Coluccino is extremely rare and is mainly associated with the province of Avellino.
- Coluccio is documented especially in the province of Reggio Calabria.
Summary
Colucci is a patronymic surname derived primarily from Cola, a medieval short form of Nicola. Its diffusion is closely linked to the popularity of Saint Nicholas and to the long-standing use of the name throughout southern and central Italy. Documentary evidence dating back to the 10th century confirms its ancient roots and its evolution into one of the many Italian surnames derived from medieval personal names.
