Collira

This form is a variant of the surname Collura.

Origin and meaning

Sicilian surname of dialectal origin, linked to traditional bread-making. It comes from the dialectal word cuddùra, meaning "ring-shaped bread". The cuddùra is the Sicilian ceremonial bread moulded in a ring, made in multiple variants according to the festivity: the Easter cuddùra cu l'ova with embedded eggs, the cuddùra di san Giuseppi of 19 March, that of the local patron saints. The term comes from the Greek kollyra and attests to the Hellenic substrate of the Sicilian baker's vocabulary. As a surname it could have originated in the trade of the specialised baker, forming a lexical pair with Buccellato and Collorella, already treated.
