Chiapperini
This form is a variant of the surname Chiappa.
Origin and meaning
Chiappa is a surname with more than one possible origin. According to E. Rossoni, it belongs to a group of surnames derived from the Germanic word klappa, meaning "trap," or from the medieval Latin verb clapare, meaning "to capture." Both terms are associated with hunting and may have originated as occupational nicknames for hunters or trappers.
V. Blunda proposes a different origin for Sicilian branches of the surname. According to his interpretation, Chiappa derives from the Sicilian dialect word chiàppa, meaning a flat stone slab or large block of tufa. In this case, the surname may have referred to someone who lived near a distinctive rock formation or to a stonemason involved in the extraction and shaping of stone used in traditional construction.
These interpretations are not mutually exclusive and may reflect separate origins that developed independently in different regions of Italy.
Distribution
According to Rossoni, Chiappa has significant concentrations in the provinces of Ancona and Bergamo. Surnames in Italy also notes that the surname is particularly common in the province of Ancona.
Variants and Related Surnames
The surname has produced several regional and diminutive forms through the addition of common Italian surname suffixes.
- Chiappero
- Chiappella
- Chiapella
- Chiappelli

Blunda also associates the related surname Chiapparo with the same geological vocabulary, linking it to terms meaning "rock" or "crag."
Notes
Rossoni's interpretation connects the surname with medieval hunting terminology of Germanic and Latin origin, while Blunda's explanation places it within the geological vocabulary of Sicily.
The coexistence of these explanations suggests that Chiappa may have arisen independently in different parts of Italy, with northern and central branches reflecting hunting-related origins and some Sicilian branches deriving from local dialectal terms associated with stone and landscape features.
