Carpitella
This form is a variant of the surname Carpita.
Origin and meaning
E. Rossoni notes that this surname presents independent clusters of origin: one in the Pisa area and another in the Messina area. According to Rossoni, it could derive from a nickname related to the presence of hornbeams in the place of origin, to the physical resistance of the bearer, or to the production or trade of carpita, a type of coarse and resistant cloth.
V. Blunda goes deeper into the Sicilian dimension of the surname and links it to the dialectal term carpita, meaning "rustic woollen blanket". In his opinion, the surname could have originated in the trade of those who wove these thick blankets, used by shepherds and peasants to protect themselves from the cold during the nights in the countryside. Blunda also highlights that Carpita forms a lexical pair with Carpitella, its diminutive, according to the habitual Sicilian opposition between the base form and the affectionate form in the onomastic treatment of everyday objects. Rossoni, for his part, places Carpitella in the Trapani area.
