According to E. Rossoni, Capra is found primarily in northern and central-western Italy, although it is also present in parts of central and southern Italy.

For some Sicilian occurrences of the surname, V. Blunda proposes an alternative origin from the Arabic term qabr, meaning "sepulchre" or "tomb". According to this interpretation, the surname may have originated as a nickname for a person living near a burial site or engaged in activities related to cemetery maintenance.

Blunda emphasizes, however, that this Sicilian hypothesis applies only to certain local occurrences and does not replace the more widely accepted derivation from the Italian word capra.
