Caniati

This form is a variant of the surname Caniato.

Origin and meaning

E. Rossoni proposes that the surname could derive from modifications of the Latin cognomen Canius, cited by Cicero when referring to Caius Canius, a Roman knight described as a cultured man of some skill. Rossoni places the form Caniato in the Rovigo area, in the Veneto, and the variant Caniati in the Ferrara area, in Emilia-Romagna.

F. De Laurentiis considers Caniato a variant of Caniati, without adding additional information about the etymological origin.
