Calcagno is a surname derived from the Latin calx, calcis ("heel"), through the later forms calcaneum and calcanium, both meaning "heel" or the back part of the foot. According to the authors cited, the surname originated as a nickname given to an individual because of a physical characteristic, peculiarity, or perhaps an injury associated with that part of the body.
Like many medieval descriptive surnames, the nickname eventually became hereditary and was passed down through successive generations.
Distribution
According to F. Miranda, Calcagno is found throughout Italy and is documented in more than 550 localities across almost all regions. The surname is especially common in Lombardia, which represents its largest area of concentration, as well as in Liguria, Sicilia, Piemonte, Campania, Toscana, Basilicata, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, and Calabria.
In Sicilia, the surname is present in all provinces, with particularly strong concentrations in the areas of Catania, Messina, and Trapani.
Surnames in Italy also notes a notable concentration in the comune of Sambuca di Sicilia, in the province of Agrigento.
Notes
The surname is documented from at least 1213, when a Raynerii Calcanei is recorded in historical sources. According to Alessandria, the surname later became particularly concentrated in the area of Alessandria, especially in localities such as Parodi and Malvicino.
E. Rossoni traces the development of Calcagno as a hereditary surname in several parts of Italy. He records its presence in Pontremoli during the 15th century, in Ferrara through the scholar Coelius Calcagninus, and in the 16th century in both Genova and the area of Salerno.
Rossoni also documents the medieval personal name Calcagno through the figure of the mercenary captain Calcagno Origone, who was active in Lombardia during the 16th century.
