Origin and meaning
The authors agree that this surname derives from the medieval name of good omen Benvenutus, meaning "welcome". It is an auspicious surname, that is, arising from the custom of celebrating the birth of a child with a name that expressed joy or good wishes for the newborn and his family.
F. Miranda documents the use of the name Benvenutus as early as the first half of the 13th century, when a notary with that name is recorded in Arezzo, and in the 14th century, in Ferrara, a ceramist identified as Benvenutus filius quondam Anzelerii. According to Miranda, the surname is spread across all the regions of Italy, with notable presence in Liguria, Calabria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Sicily, Piedmont and Lazio, as well as Puglia, Veneto and Abruzzo.
It is considered that this surname belongs to the family of those formed with the prefix ben-, derived from the Latin adverb bene ("well"), such as Bennato ("well-born") or Bentivoglio ("I love you well"). The Tuscan form Nute functions as an abbreviated variant of the same origin.
