Origin and meaning

According to E. Rossoni, it derives from modifications of the abbreviated form of names such as Roberto, Alberto, Umberto or Ruperto. Traces of the surname are documented in Bologna in the second half of the 15th century with the man of letters Dionysius Bertochus. Bertocchi has a Lombard cluster (Milan, Bergamo and Brescia areas), one between the Massa, Lucca and Bologna areas, and another in Trieste; Bertocco is clearly Venetian, typical of the Padua and Venice areas. Bertocchini is found in Tuscany and Emilia.

Anthroponymic. Fairly well known. From Bert, "bright".
