Belli

The surname Belli belongs to a large family of Italian surnames that includes forms such as Bello, Bellini, Bellomo, Bellocchio, and many others. The authors agree that its origin lies in the medieval nickname and personal name Bello, derived from the Italian adjective bello (“beautiful,” “handsome”), originally used either to describe a person’s physical appearance or as an auspicious name expressing good wishes for a child’s future.

According to E. De Felice, the name Bello was already documented in the Early Middle Ages and later gave rise to a wide range of hereditary surnames throughout Italy. Over time, numerous regional forms developed, including patronymic surnames with De or Di, especially common in southern Italy and the Veneto-Friulian area, as well as forms incorporating the articles Lo and La, typical of southern regions. De Felice also notes Slavic-influenced variants such as Bellich in Venezia Giulia and highlights the widespread diffusion of Bellini, particularly in the areas of Milan and Florence. Other derivatives include southern forms such as Bellomo and surnames such as Bellocchio, also found in Liguria.

F. De Laurentiis agrees that the surname derives from the personal name or nickname Bello/Bella, associated both with physical attractiveness and with the auspicious tradition of bestowing favorable names upon children.

E. Rossoni further develops this interpretation by tracing the surname to the medieval personal name Bellus, a name of good omen already documented in the 12th century. He cites the example of the notary Petrus Bellus, recorded in the Milan area, as evidence of its early use. Rossoni also notes differences in regional distribution: Belli is more common in central and northern Italy, while Bello is especially widespread in southern Italy, the Triveneto, Piedmont, and Sicily.

Taken together, these interpretations point to an origin rooted in positive qualities associated with beauty, grace, and good fortune. What began as a descriptive or auspicious personal name gradually became one of the most widespread and diverse surname groups in Italy.
