Bedollo
This form is a variant of the surname Bedolla.
Origin and meaning
Bedolla is not a typically Italian surname. Its greatest concentration is found in Spain and in Spanish-speaking countries, particularly in Mexico (states of Michoacán, Jalisco and Guanajuato), the United States and Latin America. The most documented etymology links it to the place name Bedolla, a locality in the province of Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain). Some sources also attribute Sephardic origins to it.
In Italy, a minority hypothesis relates it to the Trentino place name Bedollo (near Trento), whose name derives from the Latin betulla ("birch"), a plant characteristic of the area. Under this hypothesis, Bedolla could be a cognome derived from the name of a tree and a northern toponymic, but the Italian documentation is scarce.
If it arrived in the Río de la Plata as an Italian surname, it is advisable to verify the original spelling in the migratory records, since it is more likely to be a Hispano-Mexican surname.
