They all derive, directly or through affectionate forms, from the Germanic term baro (free man), declined baroni (of the free man). In some cases they may derive from dialectal forms of the term for "beret" or "cap". Documented in Grosio in Valtellina in the second half of the 15th century and in Bormio in 1630.
