Ardoinus
This form is an altered form of the surname Duina.
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that this surname derives from the aphaeresis of a name of Germanic origin. E. Rossoni notes that it is an aphaeresis of the Lombard name Audoin or of the medieval Italian name Arduino, derived from it. F. Miranda specifies that the full form is Ardovinus (also Ardoinus, Arduinus), which comes from the Germanic Hardwin, composed of the roots hard ("strong, valorous") and win ("friend"), meaning "valorous friend".
Both authors agree that the surname is peculiar to the Brescia area. Miranda adds that it is spread in several regions of Italy, with a main concentration in Lombardy, and presence also in Sicily, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Lazio, Trentino-Alto Adige, Puglia, Campania and Tuscany. In Sicily it appears in the Catania, Messina and Enna areas.
Rossoni provides information on the graphic variants: Duini is very rare and is recorded in a specific way in the centre-north of Italy and in Ferentino, in the Frosinone area; Duino, on the other hand, has a small presence in the Milan area and another more significant one in the Potenza area, in the localities of Lavello and Venosa.
