According to E. Rossoni, Amato derives primarily from the medieval Latin personal name Amatus, meaning “beloved” or, in the Christian tradition, “beloved and protected by God.” The name was widely used during the Middle Ages and gave rise to a large group of hereditary surnames, including Amato, Amati, and the feminine form Amata. Rossoni documents the personal name as early as 1195 in a deed from the area of Solofra, in present-day Avellino.

Rossoni also notes a second possible origin for some occurrences of the surname: the Italianization of the Arabic name Ahmad. In this interpretation, the surname reflects the cultural and linguistic influence of the Arab presence in Sicily.

F. Miranda agrees with both origins and explains that Ahmad derives from the Arabic verb hamida (“to praise”) and means “worthy of praise.” He notes that the concentration of the surname in parts of Sicily may be linked to the period of Arab rule on the island, during which Arabic personal names entered the local naming tradition.

Overall, Amato is most commonly derived from the Latin name Amatus, meaning “beloved” or “beloved by God,” although in some Sicilian cases it may reflect the Italianization of the Arabic name Ahmad.
