Albigni

This form is a variant of the surname Albini.

Origin and meaning

The surname Albino has a mainly anthroponymic origin of Latin root, with possible toponymic and nickname derivations. According to E. De Felice, it derives from the personal name Albino, which continues the Latin cognomen Albinus (and Albinius), already documented in the Republican era. This name originated as a nickname from the Latin albus ("white"), in reference to physical characteristics such as light skin or hair. De Felice clarifies that it should not be confused with the modern term "albino", as the latter is later and of learned character.

As for its diffusion, the surname is present mainly in northern Italy, especially in Lombardy. In some cases, E. De Felice adds, it may also derive from the place name Albino (province of Bergamo), which introduces a possible geographical reading.

For his part, E. Rossoni broadens the possibilities of origin, noting that the surname can derive both from the Latin personal name Albinius and from the gens Albinia, and even mentions historical examples such as the military tribune Marcus Albinius (4th century BC). He also agrees on the possibility of a nickname origin linked to light physical features.

Taken together, both interpretations agree in pointing to an ancient Latin origin, with multiple routes of formation: as a personal name, as a reference to a Roman family, as a physical nickname or, in some cases, as an indication of geographical provenance.
