Origine et signification

Présent sur le territoire communal de Santa Maria la Longa. Attesté entre 1238 et 1489. Première attestation : Udulrico Furlano (Pola). Ce nom, on le trouve d'ordinaire hors du Frioul (Trieste, Vénétie, Istrie, Slovénie) ou bien sur ses marges (Gorizia, zone de Pordenone, Monfalcone, Sappada).

Le mot furlan vient du latin médiéval foroiulianus, qui avait à l'origine le sens d'« habitant de la cité de Forum Julii » (c'est-à-dire Cividale) ; plus tard, par Forum Julii ou Forijulii on entendit le Frioul tout entier, et un foroiulianus était un Frioulan, quelqu'un qui venait du Frioul.

Répartition géographique : Furlan is very widespread in the Triveneto. Furlanetti, almost unique, is of the Udine area. Furlanetto is very widespread in the area comprising the provinces of Treviso, Venice and Pordenone. Furlani has an important zone in Trentino, in the Verona area and in the Trieste area, with significant presence also throughout Friuli, in the Mantua area, in the Rovigo area and in the Pesaro area. Furlano has presence in Fagagna and Colloredo di Monte Albano (Udine) and in Torano Castello (Cosenza) and Capistrano (Vibo Valentia).
