Surname Zorzi

Origin and meaning

Many surnames derive from the given name Giorgio, and among them, the Zorzi group stands out for its remarkable richness, deeply rooted in the dialects of northeastern Italy—particularly in the regions of Veneto and Friuli.

The forms Zorza and Zorzetti are typical of the Brescia province.
Zorzan is mainly found in Padua and Vicenza, while the extremely rare Zorzati appears to originate from the Veneto region.
Zorzato is also likely to have originated in Padua.
Zorzella is a localized form in Verona, especially in the towns of Cerea, Vigasio, and Zevio, as well as in Mantua.
Zorzet, extremely rare, is found in the provinces of Gorizia and Trieste.
Zorzetto is recognized as a typically Venetian form.
Zorzi is widespread across Brescia and the Veneto region, from Trentino to Padua, Verona, and the Venetian coastline.
Zorzin is found in specific areas of Vicenza and Gorizia.

In Lombardy, Zorzoli is a common surname in the Pavia area, particularly in Gambolò and Vigevano, and also in Milan.
Zorzolo, extremely rare, is also associated with Mortara and Vigevano.

All these surnames derive, either directly or through hypocoristic (diminutive) forms, from dialectal variations of the name Giorgio, transformed into Zorzo in Friulian and Venetian dialects.

Historical sources confirm the antiquity of these surnames. According to E. Rossoni, we find early mentions in Istria in the 14th century with Gilberto Zorzi, Bishop of Parenzo; in Venice in the 16th century with the notary Giovan Lorenzo Zorzi; and in Belluno in the 17th century with Marin Zorzi, who served as Podestà and Captain of the city.

Other variants such as Zorzenon (typical of Gorizia), Zorzenoni (found in Trieste and Venice), and Zorzenone (common in Udine) are believed to derive from the name Giorgenone, itself a further evolution of Giorgio.

These surname variants have also been studied by A. Bongioanni, who highlights the complexity and richness of family lines stemming from the same given name of Greek origin, handed down and reshaped over centuries and across regions.

💡 The surname Zorzi also appears as variants of the surnames Giorgi, Zorzelli and Zorzoli; also altered form of the surname Giorgio in other studies consulted in this project.

Geographic distribution: Padua and Vicenza, while the extremely rare Zorzati appears to originate from the Veneto region
